Middle School rooms lit with pink

By now many students and visitors have noticed the pink tinted lights in the Middle School. Pink lights? Aren't lights are supposed to be white? Well, not according to Mrs. Watson, Special Education teacher, and the middle school teachers that attended a conference in the spring; these pink lights are supposed to be helpful to the middle school students.

The pink look in the fluorescent lights is a pink tinted film placed on the inside of the light. These same lights are now used in the prisons around the world. With the use of pink tinted lights in prison, the number of violent outbreaks has greatly reduced. Of course, the school is not a prison and violent outbreaks are not common. The school wants to create a peaceful environment for the students. The tint in the lights will cause the room to appear calmer and will cause less strain on the eyes. The pink offers a soothing feel and will also reduce the glare from white boards and TV's.

Regular fluorescent lights can be too bright for a student, can cause strain on the eyes, and can probably cause headaches to be worse. "Everybody needs a pink tint to the lights" stated Mrs. Watson. Hopefully, with the new school year, Mrs. Watson and her colleagues will be able to see a difference in the attitudes and discipline of the students.
