News from the nurse...

In the United States, diseases like polio, measles, mumps, diphtheria and whooping cough are all but forgotten. Many of these diseases were a common cause of illness, missed school and even death less than a generation ago. Few of us can say that we have ever known anyone who suffered and died with tetanus. Thanks to more recently developed vaccines hepatitis B and Chicken pox may soon be added to the list of “old fashioned” diseases. The school nurses have been busy working on shot records this month. By state law students must have immunizations to protect them from these diseases. It is the responsibility of the school nurse to make sure that our school district is in compliance with this law.

Many families received letters in the mail last May to remind them that their student would need one or more immunizations before school began in August. Students who have not brought record of these immunizations to school must be excluded from school until proof of immunization is on file.

The Howell County Health Department offers all of the immunizations needed for school at no cost. It is located on Garfield St. in West Plains, right behind the Casey’s General Store on Broadway. For information or to make an appointment call (417) 256-7078. The HCHD comes to Willow Springs on the first Wednesday of every month. The clinic is held at the Methodist Church on Harris St. from 10 am to 2 pm and no appointment is needed. It is important to note that the “Varicella” (chickenpox) immunization is only given at the West Plains location. A parent or guardian must accompany students. Be sure to take the student’s shot records or note from the school nurse to the clinic.

Immunizations are also given at most doctor’s offices. Call your health care provider to find out about appointments and cost. Some health insurance policies cover the cost of childhood immunizations, but some do not. MC+ for Kids also covers the cost. To find out more about the immunizations that are required for school you may call the school nurses at 469-2114 and ask for extension 107, 155 or 310.
