Discipline Procedures
Reading Procedures
Students are given a warning if they are misbehaving (talking, out of seat, etc.).  There are some infractions (fighting, hitting another student, using obscene language, etc;see discipline code) for which a student will not receive a warning.  A student who misbehaves must put their name on the board which is the same as having a check in the "Blue Book".  Next they  write in their "Behavior Journal" explaining what they did, why they did it and what they can do to improve or change their behavior. I then initial the journal.

Students will be given a "STAR" reading test at the beginning of the year, and at the end of each quarter.  Missouri law states that a child must be reading within one year of grade level or be retained.  Should a child score below grade level on the STAR test, he/she will be given an individual reading assessment by the teacher to determine the child's true reading level.  In addition, the teacher will do ongoing "running records" in which the child reads orally to the teacher.  Using the STAR test, the IRA or DRA, their AR report and the running records, the child's true reading level is determined.
At the end of the day, the student must write how many "checks" they received that day and why they received them in their Planner.  The parents then initial the Planner so I know they have are aware of their child's behavior. Every day students will be reading silently during a time period called B.E.A.R. Time (Be Excited About Reading). During this time, students read AR books on their personal ZPD level, then they go take an AR test.  Students will be setting reading goals for themselves with teacher input each quarter and part of their entire reading grade comes from whether or not they met their point goal, their certification goal, their percentage correct goal and their book level goal.
Should a student receive three or more checks in one week, he/she must fill out a Behavior Report/Contract which the parents must also sign and return.  The purpose is to try and help the student take responsibility for their behavior, identify areas the student is haveing difficulty in  and change their misbehavior  with the parents' and the teacher's help.
Students who have difficulty following rules may not be allowed to go on field trips with the class.
Students will also be reading in literature groups and/or with the entire class. We do not do round robin reading, however, we do choral reading to teach students how to read with expression and at the correct pace.  Students will also have a "Reading Response" journal in which they will write their responses to what they are reading.  This helps them with comprehension as well as writing skills.
Students who receive 3 or less marks by midquarter, receive a treat in the cafeteria.
Students who receive 5 or fewer checks in a quarter, get a special treat such as a day in the park, an extra afternoon to play, etc.
Students who receive 3 or fewer checks for the entire year, will go on a skating party at the end of the year.
If a student is absent or should he/she not finish the assigned reading material in class, the student should bring the book home to read the assigned pages.  Parents will need to sign off that their child has read the assigned pages in order for the student to receive credit for completing the reading assignment.
