**********************************************

Wednesday Vision:

Is it RUDE? Is It MEAN? Is It BULLYING?

Rude = Unintentionally saying or doing something that hurts someone else.

Mean = Intentionally saying or doing something to hurt someone.

Bullying = Intentional hurtfulness, repeated over time, that involves an imbalance of power.

Scenario:  Frank was hurrying down the hall and bumped Erica, causing her to drop her books.  Frank kept going without looking back.

Answer: Frank was being rude.  He did not intend to cause harm, however, he also did not stop and apologize.

Scenario:  Terry, Will, Monica, and Tory sit together at lunch. Every time Tory walks away from the lunch table, one of the other kids picks up her backpack and moves it to a different spot .  They laugh and pretend they know nothing when she asks about it.

Answer:  Terry and the other kids are being mean.  Taking the backpack was intentional and was done in order to make Tory feel left out.

Scenario:  Laura walks up to Beth and comments about Beth's clothing. "Where did you get that outfit? The dumpster?" Laura has said this to Beth several times in the past few weeks. Beth always replies "Knock it off, Laura" and then walks away.

Answer: Laura is acting like a bully.  Laura continued to make comments about Beth's clothing after Beth told her to stop. The comments Laura has made are intentionally hurtful and have happened many times.
