Aug 6 Announcement - Alternative Options

Greetings Willow Springs R-IV Parents and Students.

We certainly hope this letter finds each of you safe and healthy. At the July 30th special Board of Education meeting, the Willow Springs BOE approved the school district’s Reentry Plan for the 2020 fall semester. We are currently in the process of finalizing enrollment for the 2020-2021 school term. We expect to see all of our students back for the new school year. However, if you do not plan to have your student attend regular seated school, it is important that you contact your school’s office no later than Friday, August 14, 2020 to discuss alternative options to continue your child’s education. If you plan to have your child attend school in person, there is no action needed on your part. The first day of school is Monday, August 24, 2020.

For your convenience, the phone numbers of all three school offices are noted below:

Willow Springs Elementary School: (417) 469-2474
Willow Springs Middle School: (417) 469-3211
Willow Springs High School: (417) 469-2114

Sincerely,
Willow Springs R-IV School Administration

2020-21 Willow Springs Reopening Plan

WILLOW STRONG SAFETY PLAN

The global Coronavirus pandemic has introduced a new level of risk for in-person instruction and in-person gatherings. Willow Springs R-IV will make reasonable best efforts to minimize risk; however, attending our schools in-person will introduce a greater risk of exposure.

This plan has two priorities:
  • Providing environments that are as safe as possible for students and staff;
  • Providing equitable, guaranteed, and viable education.

Willow Springs’ students will attend in-person beginning on Monday, August 24, 2020. Parents concerned with students attending seated school should contact your respective school office by Friday, August 14, 2020.

FACIAL COVERINGS & HYGIENE
  • Students will not be required to wear facial masks during school or while riding on school transportation.
  • Students or staff who wish to wear facial masks will not be discouraged from doing so.
  • Parents who would like to have their child wear a mask at school are asked to teach their child how to appropriately wear a mask and when to use them.
  • Hand sanitizer is readily available throughout all school buildings and school buses. All students and staff will be encouraged to sanitize when they enter the school and throughout the day.

TRANSPORTATION
  • Students are highly encouraged to practice physical distancing while waiting for the bus at their designated bus stop.
  • Parents should screen their child for temperature and other symptoms each day before boarding the school bus.
  • Each bus will be equipped with hand sanitizer dispensers and it is highly recommended that students use them upon entering the bus.
  • Buses will be deep cleaned and sanitized daily.
  • Students will have assigned seats on the bus.
  • Students from the same family are encouraged to sit together.

SOCIAL DISTANCING
  • Every precaution to the extent possible will be taken to follow social distancing protocols. Middle school and high school students will transition quickly from one class to the next without congregating.
  • Students will report straight to their classroom upon entering the building and staff will monitor to ensure that no congregating occurs.
  • Backpacks may be brought to school, but must go home at the end of each day so the buildings may be completely sanitized.
  • Water fountain usage will be restricted to filling water bottles. Bottle filling stations will replace water fountains. Students should bring their own clear water bottles to school to be used throughout the day.

HEALTH PROTOCOLS
  • Temperatures may be checked if feasible. Teachers will have access to infrared thermometers for such purpose.
  • For health and safety concerns, outside visitors, volunteers and parents will have restricted access to the school grounds. This includes visits during breakfast and lunch.
  • Water fountains will be restricted. Students are encouraged to bring their own clear water bottle/containers.
  • Health Service staff will continue to keep a record of all persons seen in the nurses’ office. Due to student privacy, these records are not public; however, information may be shared with the Howell County Health Department, as appropriate.
  • A separate space will be provided where students who are symptomatic or have an elevated temperature will wait for pickup.

BREAKFAST AND LUNCH
  • Every effort will be made to ensure social distancing during breakfast and lunch.
  • There will be no open salad bars or shared tables at any school for the indefinite future.
  • Students who bring their own lunch will need to make sure that it is secure in a lunch bag and not handled by other students.
  • High School – The high school will continue the “grab and go” breakfasts that they can take to their classrooms rather than a seated breakfast in the cafeteria. For lunch, meals will be delivered to Bear Time classes and students will have an extended Bear Time lunch period in the Bear Time classroom.
  • Middle School – With more room for chairs and tables in Grimes Auditorium, middle school students will continue with breakfast and lunch in that location. Social distancing guidelines will be followed.
  • Elementary School – The elementary school will have breakfast in the classroom at the beginning of each day. Lunch periods will be staggered further to reduce the number of students in the cafeteria so as to follow social distancing guidelines.
  • Desks will be wiped down before and after meals for meals served in classrooms.

If a student or staff member tests positive for COVID-19, the Howell County Health Department will be notified. Targeted disinfecting will take place. Communication and re-entry will be determined based on guidance from the Howell County Health Department with the intent to resume school the following day.
